Blogging vs “Life Streaming” – round one. fight.

posterousIt has been a couple weeks since I’ve written a blog post but don’t assume I’ve been slacking off!  In fact, I’ve been pumping out content through a different medium – Posterous.

Posterous is a ridiculously easy way to publish anything – text, photos, audio, or video.  Think of it as a mix between a blog platform (WordPress) and micro-messaging service (Twitter).  Less formal than a blog post but longer than a tweet, this so-called “life streaming” phenomenon is growing rapidly in certain circles.  My Posterous site, living at HeyItsDrew.com, has a more personal feel – often including photos or videos from my day-to-day life, with the occasional quote, book review, or random thought mixed in.

Similar to a Twitter, you can then choose to follow (called subscribing) other’s Posterous accounts and all of their updates are collected via a live stream.  It can be addicting.  I warned you.  Also, I can easily share my Posterous content on Twitter and Facebook (or a dozen other services) with a single click.  Sweet!

Blogging vs Life Streaming

Who wins?  Well, they both serve a unique purpose.  Blog posts generally answer a question, solve a problem, or otherwise inform or challenge the reader.  A life stream is more of a fun way to get to know a person and what they’re up to.  With less pressure on creating value and more of an emphasis on sharing, life streaming is easy to do, fun, and a great way to build relationships with others outside of the professional environment.

Mashable has a great article called “HOW TO: Get the Most out of Posterous“.  In fact, that very article inspired me to start my Posterous account – so be careful; You may be inspired.  Another popular life streaming platform is Tumblr. (In fact, I used Tumblr to keep friends and family updated during my two-week trip through Europe last summer – here)  It’s been around longer than Posterous and has a larger user base, but Posterous is gaining ground.  Check out Mashable’s article called “Tumblr versus Posterous
