When people find out about my web development company, Web Logic Now, they sort of look at me like I’m an alien. At 23 years of age, it catches people off guard and I suspect they’re not sure how to react or what question to ask next. I usually relieve the silence with a short blurb about the company as if to say, “I’m not crazy. This is a legit business and I’m passionate about it.” I might say something about why I like the lifestyle in an attempt to help them see what I’m all about. But why do I feel the need to defend the choice to start my own business?
Well, today I thought of the ultimate explanation to why I’m an entrepreneur. It allows me to achieve by my own inspiration.
That’s it. When you boil it down, people start their own ventures because working for yourself means you can be self-guiding. You can follow your own principles – the principles you’re passionate about and make you unique. Can I get a witness?

I’m with you, Drew! It is extremely rewarding to achieve by one’s own inspiration.
@Mary Ann, I just spent some time checking out your company, Cooking Capsules – what a great idea! Congratulations on all the positive press you’re receiving. I see you have an Android app and everything. Very cool. I’m a little behind the Android development – is there an app store for Android similar to the iPhone app store?
So how’s business been?
Hey Eric,
Business is growing! I’m going 110% right now with Web Logic Now and feel really pleased with the direction things are going. Are you on twitter? (@drewskwarcan)
I grew up in a family business, so the idea of entrepreneurship is ingrained in me. When I was 32 I began freelancing, and for most of the (gulp) 27 years since then, I have been self-employed. Kudos for you for striking out on your own at age 23. You have no need to defend your choice. Entrepreneurs build the businesses that create jobs.
